Sugar Bert Boxing Promotions, LLC was born in late 2015, the brainchild of former Golden Gloves boxer Bert “Sugar Bert” Wells, who coaches boxers at his gym, the legendary Paul Murphy Boxing Gym north of Atlanta. The company specializes in creating world-class events and tournaments throughout the U.S. highlighting amateur boxers. The Sugar Bert Boxing Title Belt National Championship series is an answer to the call by USA Boxing President John Brown to find ways to engage and prepare amateur boxers for the Olympic stage. After no male boxers won a medal at the 2012 Olympics—for the first time in USA Boxing history—Brown sent letters to gyms and promoters urging them to assist in training boxers to compete at a higher level. “Sugar Bert Boxing Promotions is looking toward the future. Our championship series gives amateur boxers the exposure and experience to perform on the Olympic level! The series, sanctioned by USA Boxing, consists of several qualifying events around the country leading up to the annual national championship tournament. The double elimination competitions are open to amateur boxers ages 8 and up in various weight divisions (bantam, intermediate, junior, senior, women, open men, novice, and master). Wells designed the series to foster opportunities for boxers to gain confidence in their abilities while experiencing what it feels like to perform at a high level. ● In April 2018, SBBP introduced a new ranking system that helps amateur boxers get closer to realizing their dreams of competing in the Olympics. The system allows winners of Sugar Bert Boxing Title Belt qualifiers who go on to win their championship matches to become ranked based on end results for that year. ● Since its inaugural event in Branson, Missouri in March 2016, hundreds of amateur boxers from the U.S., the Caribbean, and other countries have competed in the championship series. The following cities have hosted series events: 2019 2020 Montgomery, AL Biloxi, MS Punta Gorda, FL Punta Gorda, FL Ontario, CA Ontario, CA Lafayette, LA Lafayette, LA Kissimmee, FL Kissimmee, FL Boxing legends like World Heavyweight Champions Evander "Real Deal" Holyfield and Riddick Bowe, four-weight World Champion Pernell Whitaker, Professional Boxer and Current Super Featherweight International Champion WBC Undefeated Female Boxer Alycia Baumgarder (also a former Sugar Bert Champion), and 2016 Silver Medalist Shakur Stevenson, Olympic Medalist and Light Heavyweight Champion Al Cole are often in attendance at the Sugar Bert Boxing Title Belt events.
