 A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Mikel moved to Brooklyn, NY, where he earned multiple All-American and National Champion, while attending Transit Tech. He then moved on to the University of Kentucky where he would become the school's record holder, All-SEC and All American in an event he wasn’t even recruited for. One to define the odds, he continued to develop in the event to make his first Olympic team in 2008 ( Beijing,China) while still at the University of Kentucky. Mikel continued to grow in the sport to make serval international teams, including 5 World Championships and a total of 3 Olympic games(Beijing 08, London 12, Rio 16). A student of the sport, Mikel has also be able to make coaching contributions to notable NCAA programs such as Florida, Nebraska and his alma-mater, Kentucky. In following his need to give and serve, Mikel also pursed a childhood dream of becoming a firefighter. “It's an opportunity to give to something bigger than myself. Just as I have represented my nation, now I get to give back to people on a daily basis. I strive to inspire the hero in us all”. As a Global Ambassador through sport, and now public service, he gladly continues to be a pillar of hope and inspiration for the community. Mikel lives, trains, and works in the Atlanta area.
