Josh Sweeney was serving as a Scout Sniper with the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, when he was injured by an IED on October 28, 2009, in Nowzad, Afghanistan. The explosion resulted in the loss of both legs above the knee and serious arm injuries. During his rehabilitation at the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, Josh rediscovered his love of hockey and began training in sled hockey. Just five years after his injury, he made Team USA and scored the game-winning goal in the gold medal match at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. That same year, Josh was honored with the inaugural Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPYs, celebrating his courage and continued commitment to service through sport. He has since competed internationally in paratriathlon, cross-country skiing, and biathlon, proudly representing Team USA again at the 2022 Paralympic Games in Beijing. He now has his sights set on the 2026 Paralympic Games in Milan as a biathlete. Josh is a decorated Marine, elite athlete, and father. He is an ambassador for resilience, purpose, and performance
