Michael Gbinije is a Nigerian-American basketball player for the Detroit Pistons. of the National Basketball Association. Gbinije was raised in Chester, VA, attending Benedictine Preparatory. In March of 2010, Gbinije committed to Duke University, later transferring to Syracuse University after one season. During his senior season, Gbinije led 10th-seed Syracuse on a historic run to the Final Four. In April 2016, Michael Gbinije signed with Roc Nation Sports ahead of the 2016 NBA Draft. Gbinije was selected 49th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2016 NBA Draft. Later that summer, Gbinije participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics as a member of the Nigerian national basketball team. Gbinije’s family is familiar with athletic success in the collegiate ranks—his father, Frank, was an All-American soccer player at Temple University.
